February 20, 2012 was a truly inspiring day thanks to thousands of parents, community members, educators, union workers, patients, students, grandparents, great-grandparents, families, and friends!
As people share their memories and observations about a HUGE, spirited Day of Action you can get some of the scope and feeling of the day by checking out the photos, videos, and observations posted online by Oregon PTA or on Facebook by Our Oregon, Oregon Education Association, and our Strong Schools = Strong Oregon.
Julie & Joe Swinehart are parents and educators in Prineville, and share why they’re at the Day of Action. Julie later spoke at the rally: “Put students, not corporations, at the center of education reform.”
Following the rally, Day of Action participants marched around the Capitol then occupied the Rotunda with chants including “Whose house? Our house!” “No more cuts!” and “Whose state? Our state!”.
Bill and Kim Wilson are both educators and parents, active in Oregon PTA and the Portland Association of Teachers. Bill later spoke at the Day of Action about the need for a broad curriculum beyond math and reading scores, one that includes music, science, and art.
Dedicated (and hilarious) talk show host Carl Wolfson from AM 620 KPOJ who was the Feb. 20 Day of Action emcee: “the middle class built this country, and we must sustain it.”
